Can you beat the person on the checkout?

They always say "enter your pin number' before it comes up on the screen! Anyone else stand there with their finger over the buttons? Or it it just me? Should I try distraction? If so what? bearing in mind I don't want to end up on Crimewatch! Sorry loads of questions but as you can see it's a very important issue.
